Getting Started

Since my mission for this blog is to help others to learn to sew, I thought a page dedicated to supplies, tutorials, etc. that are helpful with getting started would be beneficial.  Links are to items that I have or suggest.

Required Supplies/Tools

  • Sewing Machine
  • Sewing Machine Needles
  • Thread
  • Scissors (I was told to buy Gingher, but honestly, my Fiskars are more comfortable to use) (I use a rotary cutter more often)
  • Iron* (I’m really happy with my Rowenta)
  • Ironing Board
  • Fabric (I have a lot of great places to buy fabric listed on this page)
  • Interfacing

Useful Items that I Use Frequently

  • Rotary Cutter* (here is a tutorial on how to change the blade)
  • Self Healing Cutting Mat* (I have a 24 x 36, but there are other sizes, I suggest to purchase the largest you can afford and have the space for)
  • Ruler* (I use my 6 x 24* the most, but also have a 1 x 6* and 6 x 6*)
  • Embroidery Scissors* (I use them for cutting thread) (This pair of Ginghers I really like)
  • Pins (I actually hate using pins, but sometimes they are necessary) (I’ve heard to always get non plastic tips because they will melt if ironed, but I have never ironed with pins in my fabric)
  • Wonder Clips* (I’ve been using these in place of pins)
  • Bobbins (most machines come with multiple bobbins, but chances are you will want to have more

Other Items that I Like

Also be sure to check out my “Where I Buy Supplies” page for places that I have purchased sewing supplies.  I only post shops that I will purchase from again.

Great Beginner Projects

I am going to link to the projects I have made, but the actual tutorials will be listed in my blog post.

Suggestions

  • Don’t be afraid to try anything
  • Make items that you want to use once they are made
  • Iron often
  • Use interfacing
  • Measure twice (or more) and cut once
  • If you are going to use a supply often, buy in bulk because you will save a ton of money in the long run.  Be sure to check etsy!
