First Giveaway–Child’s Size Tote Bag

*****This giveaway is now closed*****

When I saw that Sew, Mama, Sew was having May Giveaway Day I figured this would be a great time to have my first giveaway!

Before getting into the details, I want to first say thank you to my current readers and welcome to anyone new visiting.  If you don’t already know, I started this site to document my journey while learning to sew as well as to help others with tips and hints that I learn along the way.

Now to the giveaway…

Child's Tote Bag

I decided that I was going to make a child’s size tote bag.  It turned out so cute for my cousin’s daughter that I even decided to use the same fabric.

For this bag, I used Pellon SF-101 for the interfacing but everything else is essentially the same as the other one.  There is a small pocket on the inside and the lining fabric is the same as the handles.

I started out with appliqueing a flower on the outside but considering it was my second time doing applique it didn’t turn out.  So instead I decided to leave it plain.  I will blog about the applique experience later.

Details

To enter:  Please leave a comment telling me what your first sewing project was and how it turned out.  Here is my first project other than attempting towel bibs with the old Kenmore.

The giveaway will remain open until May 25th around 8 pm central. I will then choose a random winner and post the winner on the 26th.  Entries are limited to U.S. residents only.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. so cute! My daughter would love it! My first sewing project was a pillow when I was about 4 and I insisted on only putting in about 1/3 of the stuffing that I should have, so it wasn’t a very functional pillow 🙂

  2. Thanks for participating in the giveaway extravaganza! The tote is adorable!!

  3. My first clothing project was pajamas. My wise mom chose that for me — figuring I might not want to wear it outside. It turned out pretty well, after much seam ripping. Thank you for the cute bag! My girls would love it.

  4. Wow my first project wasn’t nearly as impressive as yours. My first project was soft baby blocks. They actually turned out cute, but I did learn a few things to improve them for the next time.

  5. My very first sewing project was when I was in the 7th grade. I wanted to make a faceless Amish doll but I didn’t have any patterns…so I made a pattern out of an old sheet first and made the doll, dress, apron, bonnet, and shoes! It turned out rather cute for not having a pattern! Hello to you from another fellow Wisconsinite!!!

  6. My grandma taught me to sew as a child, and I think my first project was a pillow, but honestly it’s been so long ago that I can’t be certain! Thanks for the chance to win!

  7. Cute bag! My mom taught me basic sewing skills… my early projects were probably a pillow and a really lame attempt at a quilt. 😉

  8. I don’t even remember what my first sewing project was, I used to sew with my mom when I was a kid. I do remember sewing some red and white striped p.j’s in Jr. High, they turned out pretty good I remember wearing them a lot.

  9. I think it was a gym bag I made in Home Ec in middle school. It was still hanging around not too long ago in my daughter’s toybox. Hmmm…

  10. My first sewing project was a boom box I made in 6th grade home ec. O’ I so did try, I am not a gal who can sew well at all:( I got a c and trust me it wasn’t woth that..lol.. That is one of my many memories I will never forget nor my mom:)

  11. My first sewing project was actually an apron for a blog friend. It turned pretty well but the pocket was a little bit crooked but she loved it anyway. Please feel free to come by my blog and enter my giveaway also!

  12. Love this bag!! My first project was a rag quilt for my sister. It went well! I made mistakes along the way, but learned a lot. Thanks for the giveaway!

  13. This would be perfect for our trips to the library!

My first project was a tote bag when I was about 10. I picked some horrible fabric! It was pretty simple:)

  14. Cute bag! DD would love it. My first sewing project was a circle skirt. Ugly color, cheap fabric, but I wore it all the time.

  15. I fashioned up a pillow case dress for me niece, asnit was my first attempt at using a machine…I suppose it came out ok-she loved it though, so that was good enough for me!

  16. My first non-home-ec project was a button down short sleeve shirt with a collar. It would have turned out fine had I graded out at the hips like I should have. As it stands, it remains unhemmed ’cause I can’t possibly wear it. Ooops.

  17. Too cute! My first sewing project was in 8th grade, so that would be in 1973, damn I’m old! ;o)
I think it was an apron.

  18. My first sewing project was making Barbie Doll clothes from left over fabric that my mom sews garments out of. I proudly called them Tube Dresses!

  19. The first one that I remember making as an adult were christmas stockings out of velvet and satin. They were a disaster. haha

  20. My first sewing project was a gown I made for my little sister. It turned out great. I made it about 20 years ago and it is now being passed around to not only my daughter, but nieces too.

  21. Goodness, my first? Been sewing for over 30 years. Probably a skirt in home ec class (when they used to teach that!)

  22. I made a drawstring lingerie bag for my best friend’s lingerie shower. It turned out good for my first project. I’m still slowly getting the hang of it.

  23. My first sewing project I think was a barbie sleeping bag. My older sister was learning to sew and I insisted I wanted to do it too. I think it was just a piece of folded fabric with two seams but I loved it because I did it myself

  24. My girl would love a tote of her own. What a great idea (if I don’t win I’ll have to make one for her). My first sewing project was place mats and matching napkins, made with the help of my mom. Definitely not inspiring and it was a long time before I made something else. scarletteandcinnamon(at)gmail(dot)com

  25. My first project was a pillow for Home Ec in sixth grade. That inspired me to learn how to sew my own hair scrunchies 🙂 Love the 90’s!

  26. My first sewing project was making a skirt for myself and a matching dress for my doll.Great giveaway! I’d be delighted to win!

    Phoenixpeacock(at)gmail(dot)com

  27. My first sewing project was a “peasant shirt” – really a shirt with elastic sleeves and neck. Everyone had to make it in Home Ec. I was hooked!

  28. This would be great for my daughter.

My first sewing project was a stuffed toy called Mini Moopy. The arms turned out too narrow and now that I looked at it years later, the fabrics totally don’t co-ordinate. But I tried and have improved a lot since them!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  29. this is a lovely bag, my daughter loves bags just like mom.
my first sewing project was a blanket for my daughter.

  30. My first project was Barbie clothes when I was 12. I used my Mom’s old treadle sewing machine!

  31. That tote is so cute, my daughter would love it!

My first sewing project was a halter top for myself when I was in high school. It turned out pretty well, but it was a simple design! 🙂

  32. This tote is adorable! The first sewing project that comes to mind is what we as a family eventually called Satan Bear. I used some red satin to make a teddy bear. I cut out two pieces of fabric in the shape I thought a bear was and had my mom help me sew them together. I stuffed it and stitched eyes on it. When it was done it was the scariest looking doll I have ever seen. It became a fond laughable memory.

  33. First attempt was a tote, not too bad if you don’t look at the seams closely. I used a really forgiving fabric that tricks the eye into thinking it’s nicer than you think it is. And no, I didn’t plan it, I noticed after it was done. :0)

  34. I LOVE this bag. It is so colorful and creative. The first thing I ever made was a pillow when I was about seven.
    Thank you!

  35. My first sewing attempt was in junior high where we were assigned to make jam shorts. The longer kind of shorts. Mine turned out okay and I think I even wore them perhaps one time. Still have them to this day.
    Thanks for the chance!

  36. My first project was doll clothes (made to my own pattern) as a child. I don’t think anyone else would have recognized them as doll clothes if they weren’t on the doll, but I was proud of them.

  37. First successful project was Roman shades for my son’s room. It was a rather ambitious start, now that I think about it. Glad it got me started sewing, though.

  38. My first sewing project was a pair of slacks. I sewed the front of the pants legs together three times. I sewed the front of the left leg to the front of the right leg. I ripped it out and would have bet my life I had checked behind myself very, very carefully. But I did it again. Ripped it out again. Then did it a third time. Dumb, huh?

  39. I was ambicious for my first sewing project. I decided to make a reversible tote bag. it has yet to be finished completely 😛

  40. home ec pillow!
    love the colors
    thanks for the giveaway!

  41. my first sewing project was taking an xl tshirt and making it into a halter. I used a pattern and everything LOL

i was so confident after that i took on sewing 4 halloween costumes next. the flinstones and the rubbles.

    and they came out GREAT!

that is a great next blog idea 🙂

  42. My first sewing project was a small quilt for my friend’s first baby. My grandma made quilts, so I knew the basics. Thanks for the giveaway!

  43. My first (machine) sewing project was a pillowcase style dress for my daughter…it turned out a bit too small so I immediatly began my second project; converting the dress into a skirt 😉 The final product turned out great! 🙂 Best, Michelle

  44. My first sewing project was some LARGE burp cloths when my first son was about to be born. It was so much fun and I got HOOKED!

  45. I’m pretty sure my first sewing project was sewing doll clothes. My mom would save her fabric scraps for me. Sewing Barbie clothes was how I first learned about seam allowances. I traced around Barbie, cut out two pieces of fabric, sewed them together and was suprised when her new pants didn’t fit!

  46. I think my first project was a pair of shorts in home ec class. Thanks for the giveaway! Leahclaireh(at)gmail(dot)com

  47. My first sewing project was in middle school home ec. I made a gigantic pillow that I had to SHOVE in the car to get home. 🙂

  48. My first I would consider that started my whole quilting adventure was a quilt for my youngest, a thomas quilt. I ended doing them in rectangles because I didn’t cut squares, but all good!!

  49. When I was eight, I made my Mom a shirt out of pink broadcloth with an appliqued heart on it. I never knew why she didn’t wear it all the time until I was an adult and she gave it to me. Seriously, broadcloth?/ absolutely sheer, and the heart was totally crooked and the whole thing was just a square with spaces left open for the neck and arms.

  50. Gosh, I’ve been sewing for almost 50 years. Can I tell you about my last project instead? 😉 I made my first project using laminated cotton. On a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a 9. I think I need a Teflon presser foot.

  51. My first sewing project was clothes for my dolls on my grandma’s old foot peddle sewing machine.

  52. My first sewing project was a butterfly shaped pillow when I was 10. It looked like a butterfly, but not a very pretty one. 🙂 Thanks for the chance to win this cute tote!

  53. I did some sewing as a teenager and a bit in college – mostly skirts and pj pants and the like. I’ve just recently picked up the hobby again (it’s been over 10 years since I sewed anything), and I started with a diaper bag. This is my 4th baby, and I’ve never had a diaper bag I loved. So I just decided to make one myself! It turned out surprisingly well (except for the zipper which works but doesn’t look fabulous). I actually started sewing just after you did and have been enjoying your entries. Your stuff is so cute, it’s hard to believe you’re a novice! I think it’s great that you’re doing this giveaway.

  54. My first sewing project was when I was twelve and my mom made me sew a simple little skirt for myself. It turned out okay, but I HATED sewing. Funny that it’s now my hobby!

  55. Love the dots. I think my first sewing project was an apron in Home Ec. Do they still teach that in school these days?

  56. This is so cute! My first sewing project was a tote bag in junior high home ec class. Who knows where it is now?!
    Thanks for the chance.
    Vanessa

  57. my first project was a baby quilt for my daughter. It’s far from perfect but I’m proud of it.

  58. My daughter would love this! My first project was a skirt I made in my beginning sewing class and it was HORRIBLE! I think I actually threw it away last year…LOL Thanks for the giveaway!

  59. Thank you for the great giveaway.

  60. Wow, so cute! My first sewing project was a dress, well lets just say it isn’t finished, I much prefer to make for the little people.

  61. My first project or the first one I finished? Lol, the first finished project was an Oliver + S outfit for my son 2 years ago and other than having problems with the button holes went really well!

  62. My grandmother taught me to sew. our first project were these door snakes… we lived in the country and the door and windows would get drafty at night so gram and I made snakes for the windows and doors. thanks for the chance to win!

  63. I am a new excited follower, can’t wait until i can explore your blog more !

  64. My first sewing project was a 9 patch block, I got a first time quilters book and that was the first project in there. From there I went on to try many other things. 🙂

  65. I recently took up sewing and started by taking up all the curtains that were dragging the floor in my house. four turned out great, but one was a disaster. I may need to buy a new curtain. lol

  66. My first project was a patchwork bag. I guess it turned out well, since 2 of my friends commissioned me to make them some as well

  67. My first sewing project was making nine patches for a nine patch queen size quilt. It actually turned out very nice and I still have the quilt.

  68. I made a quilt and turned out pretty good, proud of myself. My daughter will love the tote! thanks for a chance
    mageenadilah(at)gmail(dot)com

  69. My first sewing project was a sock monkey. hehe It was a really good beginner project since I was self teaching myself and it turned out pretty darn cute! I gave it to one of my nephews for his first birthday. =)

  70. My first sewing project was a pair of boxer shorts, which I sewed inside out and backwards before finally figuring the pattern out. I still sew stuff inside out and backwards occasionally. Thanks for the giveaway.

  71. I think my 1st sewing project was a toga for a high school play. I guess I can say it didn’t fall off :-).
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  72. My first sewing project was making a comforter for my bed. It turned out fairly well, but it was kind of a ridiculously LARGE project for a first timer. Gave me the bug though! 🙂

  73. My first sewing project was a Black Apple Doll. It turned out better than I had imagined it would! Very cute bag – thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

    Rachel

  74. My first sewing project was to make a pillow from a pre-cut pattern. Lets just say that mommy came to my rescue and fixed what I had done because it was sad. But I have gotten better since then. Thank you so much for the chance to win this. This is an awesome giveaway.

  75. First thing ever was a hand stitched skirt made from a pair of old electric blue sweatpants that had a hole in the knee. It was horrible.

  76. I made my first sewing project in high school and it was a dress out of come curtains that were no longer wanted in the windows. Thanks.

  77. I remember making a denim bag – flat squares with handles – in home ec!
